Objective: 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The course will enable the students to-

  1. Develop understanding of the subtractive process of sculptures  i.e. carving. Build a sculpture from a block of wood by mindfully chipping away the excess.
  2. Students will be able to identify the grains of wood and use tools accordingly.
  3. Construct a 3D composition in wood exemplifying their knowledge of elements and properties of art so far.
  4. Assemble carved wood into a 3D composition or relief.

The students will –

CO101:  Detect the grain of different types of wood, their moisture levels etc so they can identify good quality wood in nature as well as in factories.

 

CO102: Hypothesize a composition within the volume of the wood to practice marking out in 3D the negative and positive spaces.

 

CO103: Construct simple compositions in wood (relief or round) learn what the medium offers in the language of art.

 

CO104: Experiment with various shapes of the wood carving tools to later use them as an advantage in the compositions.

 

CO105: Detect the direction of grain of the wood so as to use tools effectively and produce desired effects in the work.

 

CO106: Master the technique of using a mallet with light or tough pressures according to the requirement of the composition.

 

CO107: Assemble carved wood into refined compositions to train in the basics of the assemblage process. 

 

CO108: Select abrasives, polished and surface grinding tools to achieve desired surface textures on the sculpture.
