What better opportunity a student can get than seeing an artist creating his masterpiece while getting along and sharing his experience and knowledge. The event was a live demonstration on “ Creative Composition” by Dr. Nandanlal Thakur. He is the Assistant Professor in the Department of Visual Arts, Himachal Pradesh University, Summer Hill, Shimla. Apart from being a teacher, he is also a renowned artist at national and international level. He has taken part as an exhibitor in various places in India & abroad. He was appointed as an administrative member in Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi.

The demonstration was organised by The Fine Arts Department of The IIS University on 17th September, 2019. Following our Indian culture Dr. Nandanlal Thakur was welcomed by tika mauli and a momento was offered as a token of appreciation. There were around 64 students in all who witnessed it.

Dr. Nandanlal Thaur was kind enough to interact with the students on each stage while creating his painting. Before starting off with his work he told the students to just play with the colours rather than paying attention and focus on the subject matter. He used different acrylic colours to apply the base. He applied the colours in strokes and a lot of free brush strokes were visible in it. The student's curiosity was getting deeper and deeper as he proceeded with playing with colours . it was looking like our artist was creating an abstract painting but in the end everyone was surprised as it turned out to be a beautiful composition of human figures. As he was applying more colours to the canvas he was continuously interacting with the students and sharing his experiences and knowledge. As said by the artist himself he had nothing on his mind before starting the work, he just went with the flow and created whatever was coming to his mind on the spot.

One of the major take back from this session was that it isn’t necessary to pre decide the subject matter of our painting. We should simply let our thoughts flow and create as we paint. Composing while playing with the colours and on the go.

It was a great experience for the students to see how to create a composition without any predefined thoughts.
