Science Behind Colours ( A virtual Art Show) by Kokuyo CAMLIN, October 2020

Colours ! An artist's life is full of these. Colours have the power to convey emotions, feelings and thoughts. We start seeing everything around us in tones and then present them to the outer world after molding them in our way. Student life is where we learn the language of colour and its implementation through our artworks.

Camlin and the Fine Arts department came together to make students aware of the world of colours through an online session ‘SCIENCE BEHIND COLOURS’. It is very important to know how and when to apply colours and to what surface, there’s science behind everything. The world of colour is also evolving on a daily basis. New surfaces, techniques, colours are introduced in the market. This session provided all the required information.

The speaker for the session was Mr. C.S. Ojha, DGM at Camlin Ltd. and was attended by 4 faculty members along with 112 students. Demonstrations were given by Ms. Sheetal Chitlangiya for dry pastels and by Mr. Shwet Goel for brush pens. Few commandments were shared with the students for how  to become a successful artist. Same colour and medium can be used differently depending on the way it is treated and with what. Same thing can give you a number of results. He provided knowledge about Camlin’s products, canvases & papers to be used, which were available.

Every artwork has a different process to be followed involving different mediums and surfaces. Students were made aware of all the options Camlin provides and even how they use it for their work. He explained very nicely the difference between the kinds of colours available for students and artists. As all the packaged products, colours too have a lot of information printed on them which becomes very confusing for a student to understand and in taking a decision about which one to buy for what purpose. Mr. O.S. Ojha was very kind to explain all the technical terms used in relation to colours and various gradings made available by Camlin. He explained the science behind the pigments, application of colours, the composition of colours, how they are prepared. He gave an interesting insight to the world of colours and surfaces used for painting.

The session was ended on an encouraging note by telling the students about an Annual Art & Design Contest organised by Camlin Art Foundation. Students were encouraged to create paintings and posters and participate at the zonal & national level. The whole session turned out to be very knowledgeable.
